Bath Tubs Raise TBI Awareness

August 21st, 2008 · No Comments

Minneapolis - A public service campaign aimed at raising awareness for traumatic brain injuries in the St. Paul area involves a bath tub in a public mall complete with bathers.

The number one cause of traumatic brain injuries are falls.  The purpose of the bathtub is to draw attention to the fact that more than 1.5 million American suffer from a traumatic brain injury each year, many of them falling in the shower.

Brain injuries can cause a wide range of cognitive and physical injuries.  The elderly as especially susceptible to slips and falls on items like floor rugs and stairs.  To help prevent this the Hennepin County Medical Center, who is sponsoring the campaign, suggests installing railing on stairways and in bathrooms.

City Rewards Children Wearing Bike Helmets

August 12th, 2008 · No Comments

Studies show that transportation accidents involving automobiles, bicycles and pedestrians account for 50% of all Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBIs) and are responsible for the vast majority of TBIs in patients under 75 years of age.  However, officials in Great Britain are attempting to reduce this percentage by rewarding children who are seen wearing bicycle helmets.

The West Somerset Police Department has teamed up with an organization called The Bicycle Helmet Initiative Trust (BHIT) to reward children in their area who are seen wearing a bike helmet when riding around their town.  The hope is that children who are rewarded will tell their friends who will, in turn, practice safety while riding not only during the summer holiday, but as a part of their normal routine.

The rewards for helmet wearing include a puzzle or yo-yo, as well as a bookmark that contains information on how to properly wear a bicycle helmet.

Injury or not: in seconds?

July 30th, 2008 · No Comments

The military has a new and very aggressive screening program in order to identify traumatic brain injury in troops.  This technology marks a great step forward in medical treatment, especially in neurology.  Soldier who suffer from “signature injury” when they return from combat are the ones who would usually receive the screening.

This isn’t the best of the news though, the Brain Trauma Foundation, with backing from the United State Defense Department is currently developing a handheld eye-tracking device.  This device will be able to determine within seconds whether or not an individual has sustained traumatic brain injury.

In general, the condition is difficult to detect and as a result, many misdiagnoses are made.  Symptoms often times get confused with other illnesses.  With the help of this new technology though, appropriate treatments will come faster and more efficiently.

Many people already recognize broken hips and other similar injuries as a possible result of senior falls. Fewer people realize that TBI resulting from an older person slipping and falling has lead to thousands of deaths and hospitalizations. In 2005 alone, 8,000 seniors were killed and another 56,000 hospitalized after a fall caused an injury to their brain. New Long-term Care Facility bring TBI Victims closer to Home

July 15th, 2008 · No Comments

A New Long-Term Care Center will help the people of South Dakota live closer to their loved ones who have suffered from traumatic brain injury. Sunrise Villa is a state-sponsored long-term stay facility that will open next month in the Sunset Manor/ Avera area. The facility will house eight beds and will the state’s first ever facility to house those suffering from traumatic brain injury.

The facility is a collaborative effort between South Dakota and Avera Health, which will run the facility. The secretary of the South Dakota Department of Social Services commented on the project, saying that “There has been a need for this in the state for quite some time.”

The facility has added benefit in that it will bring people closer to home and also save money for the state. Usually, private insurance companies take care of the cost of people with brain injuries, but the state is able to pick up the tab through the Medicaid program.

Traumatic brain injury is very serious especially in the United States. These injuries can be avoided if proper care is taken. For more information on how you can protect against unwanted injuries, call the traumatic brain injury lawyers of the Williams Kherkher law firm at 866.950.9000.
